Having dropped the Monaro muscle-car from its range, Vauxhall has opted to rebadge another V8 model from its Australian sister company, Holden.
The new VXR8 – derived from the Holden HSV Club Sport – offer more out-and-out performance than the Monaro, but is more user-friendly, being a four-door saloon with reasonable boot space and the option of automatic transmission.
The 6.0-litre engine produces 420hp and 550Nm of torque, enabling 0-60mph acceleration in just less than five seconds. The auto gearbox comes with a manual override and a sport setting and the standard-fit stability and traction control systems can be switched off to let drivers explore the upper reaches of the car’s (and their own) abilities. Vauxhall is keen to emphasis the comparative high value of the VXR8, which will be offered at £34,995 when sales start in July, making it the cheapest V8 model in its class.

The new generation Vauxhall Corsa is scheduled to make its international debut at the British International Motor Show in July, reflecting the importance of the UK market for the model. The all-new supermini is larger than the current model and has more overtly sports styling, picking up styling themes from the latest Astra and Vectra.
The larger dimensions translate into more cabin space, with improved leg and shoulder room. ~Vauxhall (and, in Europe, Opel) promises better interior finish and quality.
Dynamically, the new Corsa will benefit from an understeer control system and is promoted as the first car in its class to offer progressive sports power steering, which is light in town driving, but which weights up with more feedback to the driver at higher speeds. The sporting theme will extend to the availability on certain models of 17-inch alloys and a lowered chassis.
At launch three petrol (1.0, 1.2 and 1.4) and two diesel (1.3 and new 125hp 1.7) engines will ~be offered. Prices and specifications will be announced nearer the public sale launch later this year.
